THE WORD
"Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free... Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house...Then your light shall break forth like the dawn."" - Isaiah 58:6-10
Reflection
Almsgiving is more than giving money—it is the practice of seeing others with compassion and responding with love. Isaiah reminds us that God's heart turns toward the burdened, hungry, and overlooked.
This isn't charity from a distance; it's solidarity. It is our participation in God's compassion by drawing near and taking action. Lent invites us to ask: What does love look like in action? Whether through generosity, advocacy, or simply being present, almsgiving is love made visible.
This Week's Practice
Offer one simple, intentional act of generosity this week.
Whether it is sharing a meal, making a donation, giving someone a ride, or simply offering a listening ear and a word of encouragement—let it be done quietly, freely, and with love.
Reflection Questions
How does God's deep concern for the vulnerable, as seen in this passage, shape your own priorities?
How does viewing almsgiving as a reflection of God's character, rather than a guilt-driven obligation, change your perspective on generosity and justice?
What is one concrete way you are being invited to "share your bread" or "let light break forth" this week?
When we give, we participate in God's own generosity. Let your giving be an act of worship.
